Mental Magic

Mental magic can be played with several different rules.

  • Any card can be played as any card that excatly the same mana cost. So Rampant Growth can be a Tarmogoyf of Deathcap Cultivator depending what you need on that moment.
  • Once a card has been named you can’t name it again.

Reverse mental magic

  • When you play a card your opponent decides which card you just played that has exactly same mana cost.

Alternative rules to start the game easier.

  • You can use pretty much any pile of cards or even a deck for this
  • Each card can be played face down as a utopia land that produces any color mana but is not considered a basic land.
  • Once a turn you can discard a card to get any basic land.
  • No searching cards from decks.

Star

Star is multiplayer format designed for 5 players.

  • You win only by having your enemy color decks defeated.
  • You can attack anyone and target spells at anyone.

Little variations that you could have for bit change:

  • Have each player a tri-color deck with friendly colors [W(gu)] Bant,  [U(rw)] Esper, [B(br)] Grixis, [R(rg)] Jund, [G(rw)] Naya
  • Have each player have a tri-color deck with enemy colors [W(bg)] Abzan, [U(rw)] Jeskai, [B(gu)] Sultai, [R(wb)] Mardu, [G(ur)]Temur
  • Have each player play with the allied dual color decks [W(u)] [U(b)] [B(r)] [R(g)] [G(w)]
  • Have each player play with the enemy dual color decks [W(b)] [U(r)] [B(g)] [R(w)] [G(u)]

or as we played it:

  • Each player can play any deck
  • if the 2 players in front of you die you win.

Which color would you rather have in the color wheel? Would you rather play a game in mono color wheel or one of the variations?

Assassin

Assassin is a special multiplayer format.

  • Take 2 cards for each player, for example in 5 player game take 2 of each basic land type.
  • 1 card is given each player face-up as their “face” another is given face down as their target.
  • Every time you defeat your target, you get their target.

Alternative version or as how we played it:

  • Each player can only attack their target, with spells you can target anyone.
  • After you defeat your target you can attack anyone
  • Last one standing will win.

Rotisserie Draft

Rotisserie Draft goes as follows:

  • You get 1 of each card ever published or at least each one that is used in any deck’s
  • Each player picks 1 card at a time going in a 8 player draft from 1 to 8 and then from 8 to 1.
  • Each card picked is removed from the pool and no one else can have the same card.
  • This happens on until everyone has 45 cards in their draft pool.

The interesting bit in this format is that you can see what deck each of your opponent is building and you can take some cards that will work against them.

Reject Rare Draft

In reject rare draft each player brings in 45 unique rare cards, normally using what ever is the least useful but avoiding completely useless cards. Basically the 45 rares you are most willing to donate for this, while avoiding big bombs that will make 1 player just win all games.

In best scenario you should require that each player brings in at least 6 of each color so then you will have for sure 30 cards from each player that are not all White

Reject rare drafts are fun as the draft pool is very random and it’s missing all the common removal and boost cards.

What’s the best discreet reject rare combo you would use, hoping to get both/all cards?

Salomon draft

2 player Solomon draft goes as follows

  • All boosters are mixed into a single pile of 90 cards
  • Roll a die to choose who goes first
  • The first player picks first 8 cards from top of the pile and divides them to 2 equal piles, either with 4 cards in one pile and 4 in other.
  • If first player finds some cards much more powerful than others he can do piles that are 5 and 3, 6 and 2 or 7 and 1. 8 and 0 is also possible but  not recommended.
  • then the second players picks one of the piles and that adds that pile to he’s draft pool.
  • The players switch roles second player now picking next 8 cards and dividing them to 2 piles.
  • The last patch will have 10 cards. After that you create decks adding basic lands.

4 player Salomon draft goes as follows

  • Decide the order of players by sitting down in random order or how ever you see fit.
  • Instead of mixing all cards together and taking 8 cards at a time, you draft 1 booster at a time, creating 4 equal piles out of the 15 cards in that booster.
  • Players pick one of these piles at a time each adding theirs to his or hers draft pool.
  • You continue until each player has opened 3 boosters.

What is the best way to divide 15 cards for 4 players in your opinion?

Rochester Draft

Rocher draft is a different way of drafting this is suitable for 2 players but also for more.

Rochester draft goes as follows

  • All boosters are set to side, one booster is opened at a time, instead of each player opening one.
  • then each player picks one card at a time until no cards remain, then repeat as there is 3 times boosters compared to amount of players each player will three times be the person to get the first pick
  • The greatest difference is that all information is shared, and it takes much longer than normal draft.

What would be interesting first booster first pick in rochester draft when everyone can see you do it?

Winston Draft

Winston Draft is another 2 player draft format:

The rules go as follows:’

  • Shuffle up all 90 cards (45 from both players), without looking at them
  • Roll a die to see who goes first.
  • Create 3 face down files from top of the deck
  • Now first player checks the first pile, and decides if he wants to keep it or not,
    • if he does he sets a new card and this card is his,
    • if he does not want to keep it he will put it back and set a new card from top of the deck without looking at it.
  • The same is done with second and third pile, if player skips all 3 piles then he will get a random card from top of the deck

Now you continue until all 90 cards have been drafted.

With this format you know about 50% of what your opponent has drafted, and you might know what colors your opponent is playing. There is also a danger that you do not get enough good cards for a 40 card deck if you keep skipping all piles all the time trying to go for something better than what the piles had.

What would be the best 3 boosters for Winston draft?

Cube

Cube is when you create your own set, most cubes are done by using max 1 of each card and using powerful cards.

As you will be creating you own cube you can go for any theme, but do try to make it so that the colors are balanced and there is no cards that are always first picked or last picked.

It is also possible to make a cube in a way that you build your own set, take 4 of each common 2 of each uncommon and 1 of each rare and shuffle up boosters before play

No matter how your cube is created, it is commonly possible to manipulate the boosters in when you have this.

For example if you have a cube that is created with powerful cards having maximum 1 of each card you could make the boosters so that each booster has at least 1 of each color, 1 colorless and 1 multicolored by setting aside those cards before you mix up the rest of cards needed for your boosters. This does help to make boosters more even.
