Modern

Modern is a constucted format you can only use cards that are released after odyssey with the newer but not the newest card layout. Reprints work.

You still have following rules to create your deck:

Minimum 60 cards
Side deck maximum 15 cards
No banned cards
No cards from Alpha – Odyssey, unless they have been reprinted after odyssey.

Legacy

Legacy is bit like Vintage, but with much wider ban/restriction list.

In Legacy you have following rules for creating your deck:

Minimum 60 cards in your deck
Maximum 15 cards in your side board
No banned cards

What is your favority Legacy deck?

Vintage

In Vintage you can use almost any cards, there is a short ban list and some cards are restricted as they are too powerful or were at some point used in most decks.

Your deck still has following restrictions:

Minimum 60 cards
Maximum 4 cards of each card name.

Standard

In Stadard you can play cards from the last 2 years

Your deck has following restrictions

Minimum 60 cards
Maximum 4 of a card name
15 card side board is allowed

The rotation works as follows
“Each year, four Magic sets are released and added to Standard. Once per year, when the fall set releases, the four oldest sets in Standard rotate out.”

Prismatic

In Primatic your deck has the following restrictions:

At least 250 cards
20 cards from each color
for multicolored cards you choose which color does it count toward.

What color would you base your Primatic deck on?

Tribal wars

Tribal wars is a constructed game type where one third of your deck must be of a same creature type, be it for example elf, goblin or zombie.

In theory you can apply these rules on top of rules of Standard, vintage, commander or highlander. As long as all the players are ok with it.

Ancient

In Ancient you can only use cards that were printed in editions Alpha to Odyssey or their reprints.

The main difference of Ancient and QL magic is that in Ancient you play with the modern rules, and in QL magic you play with the original rules.

Frontier

In Frontier you can only use cards newer than M15, which has the new type of frames. Bit like Modern but even more limited.

Kingfish

Kingfish is a constructed format between Peasant and Commander.

Your deck must follow these rules:

1 rare card that is your commander
All other cards follow commanders color identity
from the rest of your 60 cards, only 5 of them can be uncommon
so 1 rare (general), 5 uncommons and 54 commons to create a deck.

Then for the game these rules apply:

Start with 30 life
Commander starts in your deck not in command zone
At the end of turn if your Commander is in in the graveyard or exile you may shuffle it to your deck.

Quantum Leap Magic

In Quantum Leap Magic you can only use cards that have the old borders, so anything that you can’t use in Modern.

more directly in sets it goes from Alpha to Odyssey.

The main difference of Ancient and QL magic is that in Ancient you play with the modern rules, and in QL magic you play with the original rules. So there is a format where you can still die from mana burn!
